A new fraud method is threatening WhatsApp users. Users should be cautious to protect themselves. Here are the details.
In today’s world where internet use is widespread, the increasing popularity of artificial intelligence leads to the emergence of new scam methods. With a new technique developed by scammers, WhatsApp users are being scammed without understanding what is happening. Cybersecurity experts have issued a warning on the subject.
WhatsApp scammers appear like your acquaintances using artificial intelligence.
In fact, the new generation scamming method followed by scammers is quite similar to traditional methods. Using a technology called deepfake, scammers imitate the voice of your acquaintances and call you, passing on details about people around you to gain your trust. After gaining your trust, they aim to abuse your goodwill by asking for a loan like an acquaintance would.
WhatsApp fraud using simple logic
Although this method seems to be based on a simple logic, it seems to start affecting people. Finally, a WhatsApp user in India fell into the trap of scammers by responding to a call that he thought he received from a former workmate. The user, who trusted the call because he remembered the voice and the other party talked about mutual friends, transferred the amount of 40,000 rupees requested by the scammer to the account sent to him. Despite transferring the amount to the account, the victim, who did not suspect, realized the situation when the other party asked for money again, and the matter was taken to law enforcement.
In the light of the investigations made by the law enforcement, the real face of the matter was fully understood. Although the said victimization could not be remedied, experts issued warnings so that other internet users would not be victims.
